Housing and homelessness

HOUSING AND HOMELESSNESS

To be homeless is to be on the very edge of society, whether that is in a rich or poor nation. In London, for example, life expectancy amongst the homeless is more than 25 years lower than the national average. Being homeless doesn’t just mean having no shelter from the cold and rain, which is a terrible prospect in itself. It often means being disconnected from humanity. If you don’t have a home you often have reduced access to healthcare, education, finance, communication and employment. It can mean no

shelter from violence, abuse and discrimination. There can be few lonelier, hopeless experiences than not having somewhere to call home. There are organizations that reach out to the homeless, providing them food, shelter, clothing, health care, and social services. Without the support of committed volunteers and activists, working in conjunction with government, this life-saving work would not be possible.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?
